A former counselor at a Riverside private school pleaded guilty Wednesday, Oct. 23, to charges involving possessing child sexual abuse material and placing a hidden recording device inside bathrooms to film boys using toilets and showers. Matthew Daniel Johnson, 34, of Bryan, Texas pleaded guilty to one count of production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography and was placed in federal custody, the Department of Justice announced. In March 2020, law enforcement searched Johnson’s home and seized several videos of boys under the age of 12, and some as young as 3 to 5 years old, engaged in sexual activity, according to Johnson’s plea agreement. During the search, Johnson told law enforcement that he hid a pen-shaped recording device in a toilet paper holder inside a school bathroom near his office at La Sierra Academy, the Department of Justice said. In his office, law enforcement found an external hard drive with more than 100 videos recorded on a hidden device that Johnson placed in a bathroom’s toilet paper roll holder to record boys using the toilet, the Department of Justice said. The videos captured around 62 young boys. Another video showed Johnson adjusting a recording device inside a bathroom at a junior high school bible camp where he was chaperoning children. The device recorded young boys using the toilet and shower, the Department of Justice said. Johnson also admitted to using and employing a minor to create a visual depiction of the victim engaging in sexual conduct in January 2020. Johnson’s sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 5. He will face a minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum sentence of up to 50 years.
