PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A Providence middle school teacher accused of sexual assault and producing child pornography has been suspended without pay from his teaching job, Target 12 has learned. Joseph Gannon, 50, has been held without bail since his arraignment on Sep. 23. No plea was entered on his behalf in court. Gannon has a bail hearing scheduled for Thursday. On Sept. 19, Providence police said a female victim walked into the public safety complex to accuse her former middle school teacher of sexual assault and producing child pornography. The teacher was later identified as Gannon. Police said the victim told them she started confiding in Gannon about her home life when she was 13 or 14 years-old, but things became sexual once she was 15 and had left Nathanael Middle School, where Gannon teaches science. Gannon was placed on paid administrative leave following his arrest, but on Oct. 1 was suspended without pay, according to Providence Public Schools spokesperson Jay Wegimont. Target 12 reached out to Gannon's lawyer by phone and email for comment, but did not hear back on Wednesday afternoon. The victim also told police Gannon would record their sexual encounters and said she later found the content on a sexually explicit website. The victim said she ended the relationship when she was 18 and asked for the illicit photos and videos back, but that Gannon "refused." The victim told police in great detail about the three-year long ordeal, which she said included sexual encounters at Gannon's Warwick home, at a Seekonk hotel and in "secluded areas" in Providence, including a local cemetery, according to court documents. Police said the victim brought in copies of emails, plus photo and video evidence on the day she reported the alleged crimes. Gannon was arrested at his job at the middle school the next morning. Police seized his phone and MacBook. Misty Delgado, chief of staff for the R.I. Department of Children, Youth & Families, told Target 12 the agency was aware of the allegations against Gannon and of his arrest, but said no further information could be shared "due to confidentiality laws." Weeks later, police searched Gannon's home, taking four cell phones, four hard drives, one PC, one iPod, and 13 iPads, three of which were labeled as Providence city property. Police also seized a safe that contained several documents, including Gannon's teaching certificate. Records show police requested a forensic analysis to extract evidence from the electronic devices.
