PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Officials are urging New Englanders to take precautions as dry weather increases the risk of wildfires. Crews responded to a massive brush fire Tuesday in Berlin, Connecticut, that claimed the life of a firefighter. Another broke out in the woods that night in Johnston — thankfully, no injuries were reported. In the last several days, Connecticut has battled seven fires, requiring mutual aid from neighboring states, according to THE R.I. Department of Environmental Management. The DEM has since issued a "high fire danger" alert, which will remain in effect until further notice. 12 News spoke to fire experts about how the community can stay safe during dry conditions. Pawtucket Fire Lieutenant Tom Degnan advises vigilance when discarding matches and cigarettes, as well as caution when using gas-fueled equipment like lawnmowers. Additionally, Seekonk Fire Prevention Captain Jeffrey Magil reminds Massachusetts residents to follow open burning laws, which are in effect from Jan. 15 to May 1.
