SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Drew Robinson has played for the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball: a career achievement many Americans are only able to dream about. His story also involves surviving a mental health crisis. Bridge dedicated to fallen soldier Robinson stopped by the KELOLAND News studios Wednesday afternoon, bringing along his furry companion: his service dog Ellie. "I call her my natural antidepressant," Robinson said. After time spent playing in the majors from 2017 to 2019, Robinson survived a suicide attempt in 2020 which took his right eye. "I was secretly struggling with a very high level of self-hatred that I didn't quite understand and wasn't willing to ask for help with," Robinson said. Today, Robinson is a mental health advocate for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. He also speaks publicly about mental health. "I just try to exemplify vulnerability and let people realize how strong that is," Robinson said. The Helpline Center, which connects people to mental health resources, has brought Robinson to Sioux Falls to speak. CEO Janet Kittams says they hope Robinson's story resonates with area athletes. "He speaks to being in the higher echelon of being a pro baseball player and just what that's like to have thoughts and struggles about not believing you should be around any longer and that it's okay to ask for help," Kittams said. "I've learned how important it is to ask for help, and I learned what it can get to if you don't ask for help, and so if there's anybody that's going through something similar to me, I know what it's like to be in that place, and I know how horrible it is," Robinson said. Robinson is speaking at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in central Sioux Falls at 7:00 Wednesday night; the event is free, and anyone can attend. Money raised by The 437 Project in 2023 is funding his appearance in Sioux Falls; The 437 Project is a run across South Dakota which puts a spotlight on mental health.
