SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) --The car dealership industry in South Dakota continues to change around the state. The South Dakota Auto Dealers Association (SD ADA) talked about the trends they are seeing in the state. Schulte Subaru in Sioux Falls has been sold with the new owners taking possession in mid-November 2024. Penitentiary searches for new warden President of the South Dakota Auto Dealers Association, Christine Vinatieri-Erickson, said the Sioux Falls area is a bit different than the rest of the state. "Statewide we have 83 rooftops of new franchise car dealerships and the Sioux Falls area we see a higher concentration of those in a more highly populated area," Vinatieri-Erickson said in an interview with KELOLAND News. Vinatieri-Erickson said the state has 83 Rooftops that house the dealerships and 47 Dealer Principals. She added that their a wide variety of owners in Sioux Falls, but South Dakota is an area where a variety of dealerships varies from town to town. "With Sioux Falls we see ownership in more dealerships from one group versus throughout South Dakota we might have one family-owned dealership in Pierre, or one family-owned dealership in Rapid City or they might have two or three rooftops," Vinatieri-Erickson said. Vinatieri-Erickson said there are plenty of trends they are analyzing. "We have seen lots of highs and lows over the years, with COVID and the shortage of computer chips and products," Vinatieri-Erickson said. "We've seen a huge increase in the used car sales as well as vehicles holding their value very well and a lot of that is the supply and demand." She added right now there are trends that South Dakota is behind on. "We are seeing a lot of changes nationwide, especially with the push of the EV (Electric Vehicle) markets in some of our neighboring communities, however, South Dakota has one of the lowest adoption rates for the EV market," said Vinatieri-Erickson. Vinatieri-Erickson said anytime someone considers selling a dealership there are a lot of decisions that go into it. "Recently we have seen a couple of other stores switch hands throughout the state of South Dakota from Chamberlain, and Redfield," Vinatieri-Erickson said. "It's a really big decision as far as why you would or wouldn't consider selling and I certainly recognize that process." Vinatieri-Erickson said she wouldn't want to speculate on the reason behind the sale, but there are some trends that point to it. "I would say this sale in the Sioux Falls market, our dealerships are larger volume, larger dealerships so I think this touches the media attention more than a smaller community or a smaller dealership, but we are seeing this nationwide with some consolidation of dealerships," said Vinatieri-Erickson. Vinatieri-Erickson said she was excited that the dealership is going to stay in the Sioux Falls market and still be here and offering vehicles for the citizens of Sioux Falls.
