CASHION, Okla. (KFOR) — A possible 68% water rate increase could hit Cashion soon. "I can't take that. 68% is a lot, holy moly," said Linda who lives near the center of the town. Cashion is run through Logan County Rural Water District #2 which covers the Kingfisher side of Cashion as well. The town is almost split in half with one side in Logan County and the other in Kingfisher County. LOCAL NEWS: OBN seizes nearly 600 lbs. of marijuana in Carter County bust For the past year, the town has had constant water breaks. The town posts on it's Facebook page east once a month that the water is being turned off in certain areas while repairs are made. Discussions have thus begun about raising the water rate percentage to almost 68%, according to those who live and work there. This report was made on October 23, and as it was being made, another alert was sent out about the water being turned off for repairs. "The water pressure rarely works properly. I'm on a fixed income, that kind of increase would crush us," said Linda. Four residents that News 4 spoke with said that they were on a fixed income and could hardly afford the rate as it is. Logan County Rural Water District #2 responded to News 4 by stating they have been warning the town's leaders and representatives for quite some time that a rate increase has to happen. "Representatives of the District have communicated with the Town of Cashion on multipleoccasions, both in writing and in person with Town representatives, to explain the necessity foran increase in the Town’s water rates. As water purchase contract negotiations are ongoing andhave not been finalized, and both parties are represented by counsel, we would have no furthercomment at this time." Logan County Rural Water District #2 Chair Diane Frick News 4 attempted several times to contact Cashion Mayor Greg Morrissey on Wednesday but was not successful. News 4 was also told to contact the counsel for the town, Luke Spaulding, but several calls were made and none were returned. The town held a special meeting Tuesday to discuss the rate increase, it is unknown what was decided. Many residents said that they would protest at Thursday's Logan County Rural Water District #2 board meeting which is set for around 6 p.m. "I just paid my water bill yesterday and was super shocked," said Sherry Blair who just bought a business near downtown Cashion. "No matter what, it's already high and it's already hard for everyone to pay bills. An increase like that would hurt even more." As of right now the rate increase is still just a discussion and nothing seems to have been set in stone yet.
