INDIANAPOLIS -- Anywhere you look in downtown Indianapolis, you're more than likely going to see a blue corduroy jacket. They're the calling card of the more than 70,000 FFA members covering the Circle City. The back of the jackets show a diverse collection of states: Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Puerto Rico and more scrawled across the back in big gold letters. ”I’ve never seen so many people from all over at one place," said Emma Neth, an FFA member for Mississippi. The National FFA Convention is a chance for students to make connections, figure out their futures and what they want to do one day. ”I want to major in Ag marketing and hopefully go to an Ag college so competing in FFA events and meeting new people throughout FFA, you'll have connections and also opportunities that normal kids don't have," said Neth. Colts owner Jim Irsay giving out free tickets for Taylor Swift’s Indy show It’s also a chance to spend some quality time in a big city, something many of these members aren’t used to. ”It is crazy big. From where our school is there is like 300 people so seeing all these people is kind of crazy,” said Kadence Smith, an FFA senior from a small southern Illinois city. For downtown business owners, the blue corduroy jackets also look a lot like green dollar signs. ”I’m going to be here all night and I'll be here all day tomorrow, too," said Kels Watson, the owner of Sauce on the Side. Watson said the National FFA Convention is one of their busiest times of the year. ”I've already seen people from last year," Watson said. "They come back in and I just remember their faces and I'm just like, "'Hey, welcome back. It's good to see you again.'" Watson also gives the FFA students high praise. ”Super nice, very courteous, very polite, very patient, as well," Watson said. "They know there are 65 or 70,000 people here but they're never rushing us." The National FFA Convention is kicking off possibly the busiest stretch of the year for downtown Indy. As the blue corduroy clears out, the sequins and sparkles will make themselves at home. Taylor Swift's three sold-out Lucas Oil Stadium concerts are a little more than a week away. ”I think everybody is just expecting to be extremely overwhelmed in the city with so many people coming in," Watson said. 97th FFA convention, expo to be hosted in downtown Indianapolis The Swift-mania has already swept across downtown. Still more than a week till @taylorswift13 gets to Indianapolis for the @tswifterastour but the signs (big and small) are all over the place. @FOX59 @CBS4Indy pic.twitter.com/rP5XTMETUz— Eric Graves (@ReporterEric) October 23, 2024 Visit Indy is expecting roughly 200,000 people in the Circle City, with more than 180,000 of those people from outside of the Indianapolis metro. That's an expected 270,000 people or more in downtown Indy within a 12-day stretch. ”Also just to throw in, we have a Pacers home opener on Sunday so it's going to be a good two weeks," Watson said. In a record-breaking year for tourism in downtown Indianapolis, these next two weeks might be the busiest stretch of them all.
