GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - Halloween, like every holiday, produces tons of items to purchase that become unused or wasted once that one night has passed. While dressing up and getting candy is fun for some, behind-the-scenes, it can be a different story. From the candy wrappers, outdoor decorations, candy baskets, pumpkins and costumes, these items cause issues at the sorting facility in Outagamie County at the Recycling and Solid Waste Department. ‘Spooktacular’ Halloween house thrills visitors in Kimberly Jordan Hiller, who serves as the Outagamie County Recycling and Solid Waste Coordinator, explained that not recycling these items properly can create multiple problems. "Not only do they not get recycled properly, they actually become contamination in any other lines or they become tanglers inside of our equipment, causing downtime or causing other material to not get recycled," says Hiller. These products are unable to be recycled and if they are thrown in the trash, can not be broken down at landfills because of the products they are made out of. Instead of placing them in your curbside bins or the trash, Goodwill North Central Wisconsin's Public Relations and Communications Manager, Robert Dye, says that donating these items can help the environment. Bay Park Square to hold craft fair and Mall-O-Ween event "The way it helps the environment is a lot of these costumes and the décor are petroleum based which means they don't really break down in landfills so they could harm the environment so bring them here. It gives them a second life and helps out the community too," says Dye. Goodwill accepts drop-offs of any items during open hours of operations. It is important to check with other locations to see what they need or if they can accept the item before doing so.
