FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Tom Didier served on Fort Wayne City Council for years before running for mayor in 2023. Anyone who has recently lived in Fort Wayne has probably heard of him, and his large amount of Facebook friends reflects that - at least it used to. Didier's account was hacked and he eventually deleted it. It all started with a text from someone he thought he knew. "The person said, 'Hey Tom it's Deb, can you help me with my Facebook?'," Didier recounted the text conversation that began with the texter explaining that she had gotten a new number. It was actually a hacker posing as one of Didier's real friends. The hacker asked Didier for a number sent to his email, claiming they needed it to reset their Facebook account. It turned out to be a code to get into Didier's account. From there on the hacker had full control. "I thought I was talking to a trusted person," Didier said. Didier's Facebook page took a turn from its normal content, selling a number of items. The seller claimed it was to put Didier's dad into an assisted living home, but there was a problem with that. "I was getting hundreds of phone calls the first day," Didier said. "One hundred phone calls and texts saying 'Hey Tom, did your Facebook get hacked, do you have a car sale?' I never sold anything on my Facebook." Didier came to Facebook for help, but he got frustrated after three weeks with no resolution, so he turned to Congressman Jim Banks. "I gotta tell you, Congressman Banks' office was the answer to my prayer," Didier said. "There has to be more responsibility from Facebook." "..rampant epidemic that is costing billions of dollars..."Jim Banks on Facebook account takeovers. Banks' team was able to get through to Facebook and get Didier his account back. He deleted it, deciding to stick with his political account and a smaller personal account. "I can tell you the anxiety for probably three of four days was off the roof, just waiting to see if it would actually work," Didier said. "And it finally did." However, Banks wasn't satisfied with just helping Didier. In an open letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, he blasted the company's poor security for billions in losses. "I’m writing you today urging Meta to take immediate action to address the increasing threatFacebook account takeovers and scams present to constituents in my district and Americansacross the country," reads the beginning of the letter. "Facebook must do more to address this rampant epidemic that is costing billions of dollars and leaving millions of users feeling victimized and helpless." The letter concludes by asking Zuckerberg the following seven questions: What steps is Meta actively taking to protect Facebook users from account takeovers? What do you believe has led to the exponential increase in fraudulent posts? What safeguards are in place to protect users from being scammed by hackers? How many users have been a victim of account takeovers the past four years? How is Meta working with law enforcement at the state, local, and federal level to holdhackers accountable? How many employees at Meta are dedicated to preventing account takeovers andassisting users whose accounts have been compromised? Will Meta commit to making user support for victims of account takeovers moreaccessible? The full letter is two pages long and cites some of the people Banks represents (including Didier), reports by the Federal Trade Commission and reports from outlets like Wired. For his part, Didier said he was distracted and not thinking about hackers, but now he's far more vigilant. "When you're on Facebook you're putting yourself out there," Didier said. "I'm leery right now." He encourages everyone to slow down and think about suspicious texts and add extra security like two-factor authentication on all of the social media accounts.
