GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)-- Residents in Georgetown County are getting ahead of the long lines and wait times by heading to the polls early this year. Officials expect to break post-pandemic records of residents voting early by the end of this week.  Early voting started at the beginning of this week, and since then, officials said crowds have grown larger and larger every day, which caught them by surprise. “It was crazy and super busy here on Monday. We have a small lobby, so there was no floor space. We had a line that almost wrapped around the building,” said Aphra McCrea, the director of Georgetown County Voter Registration and Election. Officials said on Monday, 5% of registered voters cast their ballots, and on Tuesday, that number increased to 7%. as of today, that percentage has doubled, and they're hoping to keep it up with just over a week left to vote early. “Well, you never know what could happen. You may have to make an emergency trip out of town. You cast your vote early, and you’re done. You fulfilled your voting responsibility,” said McCrea. Whether you vote early or on election day, officials encourage you to make your voice heard as two major referendums are on the Georgetown County ballot this year. “There are two questions on the ballot for additional sales taxes: one for local option sales tax, which gives credit back to your property taxes, and the other is a capital project sales tax that money would be used to build new infrastructure in Georgetown County buildings most of it would go towards water and sewer projects, and we have a great need for that across the county,” said Walt Ackerman, the Georgetown County director of administration.
