BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – State agents are investigating a Berkeley County magistrate judge over an alleged assault, according to the State Law Enforcement Division. Law enforcement officials told News 2 that a rideshare driver claimed Magistrate Martin Housand assaulted them in Saint Stephen on Sept. 27 and reported it to officials. An investigation began, and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office requested SLED to take over the investigation on Sept. 30. SLED’s investigation is ongoing. Housand has not been charged at this point in the investigation. Housand is a judge for Berkeley County’s Bond Court. He previously ran for the Berkeley County Sheriff position in 2015. However, he lost to current Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis. Before becoming a judge, Housand spent 22 years in the South Carolina Highway Patrol and was the Santee police chief.
