MINOT, ND (KXNET) — The Minot City Council recently discussed removing traffic lights near a local school. The lights at the intersection of 6th Street Southwest and 11th Avenue Southwest in Minot have been temporarily changed to all red flashing traffic signals due to a signal failure in August. With schools nearby, there is not only vehicle traffic but also pedestrian traffic at the intersection. City leaders say in a traffic study, a school crossing signal was the only one needed, and installing other traffic signals is not required. Bismarck/Mandan golf courses closing for winter season City staff recommended the council approve removing the traffic signal control and adding an all-way stop control, as the cost of traffic lights has gone up in recent years — but council member Mike Blessum says that this may not be the final solution. "The data backed it up that a four-way stop made sense here," he states, "and the long-term plan also heads toward a roundabout — which I think is a better solution long-term when we can use them in the right places. Blessum adds that right now, he is more uncomfortable with four-way stops than he is with a roundabout in town today. He thinks roundabouts are easier to understand. The motion passed unanimously.
