COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- An abandoned shopping center on Columbus' east side will soon receive a reboot.  In an announcement on Wednesday, the former Kroger store on Refugee Road that once served the Eastland area will become the Eastland Prosperity Center, a multi-use facility that will offer services for just about everyone.  After shutting its doors in May 2022, the former Kroger location has remained vacant.  The community, already facing food insecurity, was quickly faced with a bigger problem, but a partnership between the Mid Ohio Food Collective and the city is looking to address the need of food insecurity, health concerns and so much more.  Speaking at the announcement of what will be called the Eastland Prosperity Center, Mid-Ohio Food Collective President and CEO Matt Habash said the space will be transformative for both the clients and the community.  "67,000 square feet of space to come together; it’s five times larger than any other facility that we will have and it’s an area that doesn’t have much in the way of human services has been," Habash said.  Construction is slated to begin in 2025 and the center is expected to welcome clients by 2026. Renderings show an MOFC staple -- a fresh food market -- but the space will also offer wrap-around services. The estimated cost of the project is $13.5 million, with the city funding $4 million of that.  It's a project on the east side that residents said is a long time coming.  "A lot of people in the community that don't have sustenance, don't have nutrition," resident Hale Harmon said. "We don't have every day social services, so this is a step in the right direction."
