COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- With less than two weeks until the general election, NBC4 went behind the scenes to see what goes into training poll workers.  Poll workers need to take at least one class for every election they work.  Each county creates its training course based on guidance from the Ohio Secretary of State’s office. In Franklin County, that means classes that can last three hours and come with a 244-page training manual. The three-hour class is for voter location managers and voter location deputies.   “These are kind of the tip of the spear, the folks that are actually running the location,” Franklin County Board of Elections public information officer Aaron Sellers said.   The class includes information on everything like ensuring election materials are safe.   “We will seal it with a snap seal, just like the snap seal that we used on our green voting bag,” poll worker trainer Denise Smith explained to the class.   Training also includes ensuring no one underage or a non-citizen casts a ballot, and making sure workers understand what sort of identification is and is not acceptable.  “They need to be trained in the most up-to-date rules and guidelines, not only from the legislature, but directives from the secretary of state's office,” Sellers said.   Across the state, there is an emphasis on everything being done with the supervision of both a Democrat and a Republican.   “This is going to be sealed and cannot be unsealed until Monday night when you arrive at your location and have your bi-partisan buddy,” Smith said to the class.   Aside from mandatory classes, poll workers can also attend practice sessions. On the Monday before the election, polling locations are closed so everyone can prepare until the last second.    “I’m sure they will be some more changes coming down, different things that we’ll want to get to you last minute,” Smith said.   Overall, the state has 40,000 poll workers signed up to help on Election Day.   It's not too late to volunteer; you can learn more about the process and book a training class by going to this page.
