Founded by Loren Lockman in 1997, Tanglewood Wellness Center has offered specialized wellness services across the Americas—from Bethesda, Maryland, and Panama, to the rich and abundant landscape of Costa Rica, where it now operates. Since its inception, Tanglewood has acted as a catalyst for thousands of individuals seeking to improve their overall quality of life, particularly through the self-healing benefits of the water-only fast. Situated upon 37 acres of rainforest in the mountainous region of the Nicoya Peninsula, the wellness center maintains a serene natural environment, well suited to its mission to promote physiological rest, healing, and detoxification. As Tanglewood celebrates its 29th year of transformational wellness services, founder Loren Lockman shares the inspiration behind its decades of remarkable success. As a cadet at the US Air Force Academy, Loren continued to swim competitively, as he had done for many years, playing water polo, wrestling, and boxing frequently. While he remained active, Loren had long been enduring a battle with addiction to drugs and alcohol, which eventually caught up with him. At 23, he was diagnosed with several illnesses, including chronic fatigue, sinusitis, irritable bowel syndrome, systemic candida, and a total of 57 allergies. This led him down a three-year pursuit of a medical cure—one that left him feeling more ill and no closer to experiencing long-lasting relief. Opting to turn away from popularized pharmaceutical approaches, he developed his own methods and surrendered entirely to the laws of nature. Loren comments: “Over three years, I worked with three different doctors, all of whom were unsuccessful in proactively addressing my concerns. As I took the initiative to walk away from medicine, I began researching alternative healing methods and underwent a radical dietary change. After experiencing the effects of water-only fasting for the first time, I found myself feeling uplifted and much more energized—so much so, that the people around me began to take note and approach me for my experiential advice.” During his extensive research, Loren came across an array of insightful literature on the topic—in particular, Professor Arnold Ehret’s ‘Rational Fasting’ which directly correlates fasting with therapeutic healing. Experiencing this interconnection firsthand, Loren delved deeper into Ehret’s theory and uncovered its ground-breaking efficacy. Furthermore, Loren discovered the existence of numerous fasting centers around the world and endeavored to construct his own, with a greater focus on what Ehret emphasizes as the power of mother nature. Taking his personal experiences and in-depth studies with him, Loren began sharing his knowledge with people from across the globe, culminating in the establishment of the Tanglewood Wellness Center. He continues: “Based on research, my own healing journey, and an analysis of a client’s goals and intentions, I put together a tailored plan of action for each individual. At Tanglewood, we take daily measurements of hydration levels, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and many more to ensure each client is not only getting the most out of their supervised water-only fast but is as safe as possible.” Over the years, Tanglewood has coached 11,000 participants back to better levels of health, rooting its services in the fact that every organism on the planet is both self-healing and self-cleansing. Encompassing all stages of the fasting journey, Loren highlights that the end of the fast is just as important as the beginning—planting 2,000 fruit trees around the premises in preparation for a nutritional re-feeding phase. Today, Tanglewood Wellness Center has become renowned for its personalized and innovative stance on nutrition, health, and wellness. As a long-standing enterprise with thousands of reenergized clients, it continues its dedicated work in this space, reaching more people each year through its on-site and remote services.
