(COLORADO SPRINGS) — If you've been tossing and turning and can't get to sleep, maybe the recent temperature change can help. According to Sleepfoundation.org, it is estimated that 53 percent of adults in the United States sleep with their bedroom windows closed. However, new data shows it is better to keep your windows open and let the cooler air in. Data from the National Insititute of Health says temperatures in the 60s can encourage longer and deeper sleep. In addition, the study shows people who slept with an open window performed better on a cognitive test the next day. One reason this could happen is that opening a window at night increases ventilation, decreases carbon dioxide levels, and clears out pollutants. If safety is a concern, researchers found that just leaving a bedroom door open can improve air quality.
