SLED charges former Dorchester County detention deputy with assault and battery

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A former detention deputy in Dorchester County has been charged with assault and battery.
Antoine Newton, 33, was arrested on Wednesday by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division following an investigation into an incident that happened Aug. 13.
An affidavit shows Newtown, while working at the Dorchester County Detention Center, struck a victim several times after they had already complied and stopped fighting deputies as they were attempting to restrain the individual.
The victim was incarcerated at the jail.
The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office requested SLED investigate the incident.
Newton was booked into the Dorchester County Detention Center on a charge of third-degree assault and battery.
