Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect the new information provided by ATCEMS and the Austin Fire Department. AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person was taken to a hospital Wednesday morning after a reported medical emergency during a first responder training in northeast Austin, according to Austin-Travis County EMS. However, the Austin Fire Department said the person believed to be in need of medical help was a role player with the training company who "did not respond to commands to end the scenario" and wasn't "experiencing a true medical event." ATCEMS initially posted on X at 9:56 a.m. that medics and Austin firefighters were on the scene of a reported tunnel collapse with one patient involved. In an update at 11:10 a.m. ATCEMS said there was not a tunnel collapse, but that there was a trench rescue training exercise going on with AFD and partners, and then a participant who wasn't a firefighter experienced a medical emergency and required extrication. "The person continued to behave in a manner that led AFD personnel to believe the person was experiencing a true medical event. The company later provided clarification that that was not the case," AFD said on social media. The post said it happened near 8709 N. Interstate 35 Service Road northbound, which is close to Park Plaza Drive.
