AUSTIN (KXAN) — Halloween in Central Texas can deliver a wide variety of extreme weather. Anything from scorching heat, freezing nights, heavy rain, river flooding and tornadoes have been recorded in Austin on the spookiest day of the year. On Oct. 31, our normal high temperature in Austin is 77°, and our normal low temperature is 56°. Overnight low temperatures dipped below freezing in 1993 When looking at Halloween extremes, high temperatures in 2003 climbed to 90°, and overnight low temperatures in 1993 dropped to 30°. When looking at total 24-hour precipitation, 2.8" of rain fell in 1900. Multiple Halloweens have produced severe weather in Central Texas. The National Weather Service (NWS) Austin/San Antonio Office recalls two notable events in its past weather tab. In 2013, the Onion Creek, San Marcos and Blanco rivers experienced life-threatening flooding. Gauges were "over-topped" with record flood levels. NWS said, "Elm Creek was running 40-50 feet wide where it is normally about 4 feet." The creek crested over 40" on the morning of the 31st. Over 700 homes were damaged in Travis County. In the 1940s, the NWS recalls a "significant-tornado" striking several ranches in Fredericksburg. The bottom line is nothing is off-limits weather-wise on Halloween. Hey, at least it hasn't snowed.
