ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Seneca County is calling for the New York DEC to investigate the Seneca Meadows Landfill. The County Board of Supervisors voted to urge the DEC to look into the potential health impacts that any continued operation of the landfill would have on the community. Furthermore, the county seeks to be an interested party due to the potential impacts on the community. They also request enhanced public participation during the review process. The Seneca Meadows Landfill is due to shut down next year, but the operator of the landfill, Waste Connections, applied for a permit to continue operations through 2040. Although the Town Board tabled the vote for months, residents complained about the "horrendous odor" coming from the landfill. If the landfill continues its operation, it is looking to add around 47 million cubic yards of air space and overfilling around 191 acres of permitted landfill area, according to the resolution.
