FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Most people are getting ready for Halloween to arrive, but some parents in Reedley will have to worry about more than just their kids' candy. On Oct. 31, the Westboro Baptist Church will hold a demonstration outside of Reedley High School, protesting two clubs at the school. Back on Oct. 3, the City of Reedley received a fax from the church about their intentions to hold a public demonstration. This is the same group planning a demonstration in front of Roosevelt High School in Fresno on Oct. 28. “We really were scratching our heads. Why Reedley? We still don't have an answer to that question,” said Reedley City Manager Nicole Zieba. Questions are still unanswered after the City of Reedley received a fax from the Westboro Baptist Church with plans to hold a public demonstration and religious service outside of Reedley High School on Halloween from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. “They are protesting two particular clubs on campus. The Gay-Straight Alliance and the Catholics in Action Club. Our understanding is they believe those to be false religion and something that they protest against,” Zieba said. The church did confirm its visits to Fresno and Reedley, saying, “We bring the gospel of our lord Jesus Christ, preaching to every creature, so that in the day of judgment, which is upon this nation, as in her destruction, there will be none that can say I did not know.” “I know members of our community are likely upset about Westboro Baptist Church coming with what can be really incendiary rhetoric. However, the Constitution guarantees all of us, all of us Americans, the right to free speech and peaceable assembly,” Zieba said. Reedley will ensure Halloween is off to a smooth start. “We have been coordinating with other law enforcement agencies as well as and primarily the school district, so that we can ensure that parents and kids are safe as they go to school,” Zieba said. Zieba says that she expects many counter-protesters to arrive in front of the high school come the morning of Halloween.
