Mercer County will direct American Rescue Plan funds toward recreation programs for seniors and children, county officials announced this week. The Mercer County Board of Commissioners approved funding for Mercer-At-Play For All, a program that provides grants for accessible playgrounds, senior recreation facilities, and after-school sports mentoring. The program partners with municipalities and non-profits across the county. “Mercer-At-Play has been a fantastic success since its inception in 2006, but it has often taken far too long for funds to be approved and dispersed,” said County Executive Dan Benson. “Using federal ARPA dollars, we can quickly connect funding to non-profits and towns to ensure our youngest and oldest residents have better access to expanded recreation opportunities.” The program builds on the original Mercer-At-Play initiative from 2006, which focused on partnerships with the county’s 12 municipalities for recreation projects. The new program targets populations with limited access to recreation facilities. County Commissioner Chair John Cimino told the board the funds would benefit residents across age groups. “Recreation is enriching for our youth and seniors,” said Cimino. “This program provides excellent opportunities to expand outdoor fun and exercise for Mercer residents.” The resolution passed during the commissioners’ most recent meeting. The county has not announced when organizations can apply for the grants.
