While there’s a difference between false statements and those that are merely misleading, the effects can be similar. Compare, for instance, the statement that Haitian immigrants were eating Springfield, Ohio’s cats with the claim that the Biden administration used FEMA money on illegal aliens.  The Haitian immigrant claim, as J.D. Vance admitted, is false (although he said it made for a good story). The claim that the Biden administration used FEMA money on illegal aliens is simply misleading. FEMA administers a number of programs, including the Disaster Relief Program (for hurricanes, floods and other disasters) and the Shelter and Services Program (SSP).  Congress created the SSP in 2023 to make payments to non-federal entities that provide shelter and other eligible services to migrants that have been released from DHS custody.  The SSP replaced a similar program, the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, which Congress established in 1983. Is this FEMA money? Well, sort of. The appropriation for the SSP actually falls under the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol budget, but FEMA administers the program in coordination with CPB.  So, yes, it can be said that, as Congress intended, “FEMA money” is being used for illegal aliens. However, the Biden administration has used DRP funds solely for disaster relief.  It’s perhaps easier to be confused by misleading statements than by false ones.  Immigrants eating cats? Pretty easy to show that wasn’t true (although it didn’t stop Trump and Vance from espousing it).  On the other hand, it’s also easy to document that FEMA spent money on migrants. After all, Congress directed it to do so.  However, it’s unethical, immoral and just plain evil for those who know better to intentionally mislead people by implying that the money spent on migrants was intended for hurricane and other disaster victims. They don’t deserve our trust or our vote.Robin FilionPinebrookThe post True but misleading appeared first on Park Record.
