HANSON, Mass. (WPRI) — Town officials in Hanson, Massachusetts, say its battle with a resident is starting to get expensive. A man has been projecting a Donald Trump campaign logo on the town-owned water tower and despite daily fines, he is not backing down, but neither is the town. The unidentified resident started shining the image on the tower on Oct 11. He was issued a cease-and-desist order and is being fined $100 per day until he stops. On Sunday, supporters of Trump rallied for the man, only known as "Mr. X," lining up on the street about a mile away from the tower. The highway department has now put out a spotlight to shine on the water tower to dim the projection each night. Since the cease-and-desist was sent, the town says the homeowner has not projected the image but has not declined to agree in writing that he will not project the image onto the tower again. Tuesday night, the town select board decided to keep the bright lights in place, which is costing them thousands of dollars. Supporters of the projection believe it should be allowed under freedom of speech, but the town said political signs are only allowed on private property, not municipal property unless a permit has been issued.
