The Chiefs have done it again, they have set out to revitalize another veteran career by trading for DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans. In the wake of the Rashee Rice injury, the Chiefs looked to the trade market to try and temporarily fill that hole and Hopkins was the solution. The Titans would receive a conditional fourth-round pick in a trade that is expected to be completed Wednesday, sources said. This is yet another veteran piece that the Chiefs have brought in that others believed the shelf life had expired on. We saw it with Juju Smith-Schuster, Kareem Hunt and now DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins career in Houston made him arguably the top receiver in the league for a year or two, as Hopkins went a full season without a single drop (still unheard of), but his play slowly declined when he ended up in Arizona then Tennessee. Hopkins has only accounted for 15 catches for 173 yards and 1 touchdown thus far this season, and was visibly miffed about his lack of playing time on Sunday against Buffalo. But he can likely match those numbers in two games with the Chiefs as almost anyone can play in the Kansas City offense and have success. The reason these veteran players can succeed in Kansas City but nowhere else is because of Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid. These two is easily the best quarterback and coach combination in the league now, and maybe the best the league has ever seen. Guys like Smith-Schuster, Hunt and Hopkins can thrive in this offense because the scheme is receiver-friendly and Mahomes can make every pass so you don’t have to run a perfect route. If you are able to find space in a defense, you can play in the Chiefs offense. Luckily for Hopkins, he doesn’t require a lot of space to make a catch.
