Applications are being taken now for supplemental housing for the unsheltered in Lexington using motel rooms. The program begins on November first. Three Council members Tuesday asked questions about security levels, particularly at two adjacent motels. First District Council Member Tayna Fogle said residents living in the sixth district and those residing in the motels need to feel safe. “Just because they are less fortunate or for whatever reasons they’re in this predicament does not mean that we should not see them as a priority in this City,” said Fogle. Fogle said she would have preferred to see more security companies considered and would like to have females as part of the staffing. Housing Advocacy and Community Development Commissioner Charlie Lanter said security will be onsite 24/7 with two people at the side-by-side motels. “This is the same level of programming of security that we have used for the last several years and we’ve not had any issues. And it’s even the same company that we used last year, so part of the appeal is they know the population and they understand the issues they’re likely to encounter,” said Lanter. The Housing commissioner anticipates some occupancy when the program opens. Lanter doesn’t expect the motel lodging to run at capacity at the beginning of November.
