DUBLIN, Ohio (WCMH) — A Dublin woman passionate about painting pumpkins with pop culture references has unveiled her creation for the 2024 Halloween season. Bowen YangKin (Photo Courtesy/ Paras Pumpkins) In a news release, Jeanette Paras detailed her decision to select “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang's portrayal of three-month-old Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus, as this year's theme. Named “Bowen YangKin,” the 611-pound pumpkin was grown and donated by Rita Waits of Galena. “Moo Deng burst onto the Internet in videos and memes and seemed to own the algorithm,” said Paras. “He was everywhere! And then, the appearance by Bowen Yang on SNL’s Weekend Update put them both at the top of my list. I don’t make the news, I pumpkinize it. Bowen YangKin is this year’s giant celebrity pumpkin, and he represents a nice break from the other news coming at us 24 hours a day.” Paras, 69, has been displaying her painted pumpkins with celebrity faces for more than 30 years, and has become a seasonal icon herself. The news release noted that she has received national and international attention with her creations featured on “CNN, NBC News, Fox News, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo! News, the Huffington Post, Gawker, and other outlets.” Additionally, her work has been shown at the Ohio Governor’s Mansion. The largest pumpkin she put on her porch was 2021's Ted LassoKin, which weighed 705 pounds. Paras always keeps the personality she chooses under wraps. “This is top-secret stuff,” said Paras. “Each year, I cover the windows of my studio/garage because no one knows who it will be until the reveal. And when I crack up because of one of my pumpkins, that’s when I know I’ve picked the right subject. It’s so much fun to do this every time; I love the reactions from my neighbors and all the people who stop by to take pictures.” Paras, who calls herself a “two-time breast cancer thrive-r” has included a fundraising element with her artwork. As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Paras Pumpkins partnered with the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at Ohio State's James Cancer Hospital. Donations can be made at give.osu.edu/ParasPumpkins. Paras will match the first $2,500 in donations dollar-for-dollar.
