SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- San Jose councilman Omar Torres, facing child sex crime allegations, has refused to step down. Critics are calling on the city council to remove Torres from office. On Tuesday, the city council voted to remove Torres from all of his council-assigned appointments. Last week, Mayor Matt Mahan and other councilmembers called for Torres to resign. “Omar Torres is holding his seat hostage and taking away the right to representation from 100,000 residents of San Jose even after the entire council has called for his resignation. While we don’t have the tools we need to fully remove him from office as the community has asked us to do, we can and have stripped him from all committees, boards and commissions," Mahan said. Allegations against Torres were revealed earlier this month. Since that time, Torres has not attended council duties and was absent from a council meeting on Oct. 8. The absence was marked as unexcused. San Jose mayor, city council call on Omar Torres to resign Council members are allowed to miss meetings, but the absences require permission. Torres claimed that he missed the Oct. 8 meeting due to an illness. City council members are meeting Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. to determine if Torres’s Oct. 8 unexcused absence should be changed to excused. According to the city charter, a council member with five consecutive unexcused absences can be removed from the city council. Torres represents District 3.
