TOPEKA (KSNT) - A case of E. coli identified in Kansas has been linked to a McDonald's in Colorado, according to state health officials. Federal health officials are investigating an e. coli outbreak linked to food from McDonald’s that has sickened 50 people in the U.S., including one person in the Sunflower State. Matthew Lara, a spokesman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), sent a statement to Nexstar's Kansas Capitol Bureau on Tuesday. "KDHE cannot release identifying information as it relates to a patient, which includes their resident county. However, this individual case is related to the outbreak specifically connected to a McDonalds in Colorado while they were visiting the state during the outbreak period." Matthew Lara, KDHE Director of Communications and Legislative Affairs Fifty people in ten states have been impacted by the outbreak, the majority of cases coming from Nebraska and Colorado. One person has died due to this situation in Colorado. In total, 10 people have been hospitalized. In one case, a child is hospitalized due to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). One case has also been reported in Kansas' neighboring state, Missouri. McDonald’s has proactively removed some ingredients used in its quarter pounder burgers such as onions and beef patties from stores in the impacted states while the investigation is underway, according to the CDC.
