ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – The aftermath of historic flooding in Roswell is being met by community groups, and alongside local leaders, they are trying to figure out what the next steps are toward a return to normal. While the water has receded and most roads are clear around Roswell and Chaves County, local leaders are worried about more damage lying under the surface that they still need to assess. Nothing failed 100% but everything took at least some level of damage.. everything that was in the storm will need some maintenance at the very least," said Superintendent Brian Houghtalin, Chaves County Flood Commission. The county flood commission said it will focus on clearing drainage channels and rebuilding flood control structures. That includes the berm and levees that help drain water around Roswell. The flood control's superintendent said the current berm that protects the south side of the city was not breached but water washed over the top of it. Meanwhile, community efforts are going strong with different organizations providing help. Casakids is a group that normally works with at-risk kids and families who need social services, food, utility and housing assistance. They said the flood has turned some family's lives upside down. "Just a minute ago a family came in that lost everything asking for clothes and there's not much but we were able to help that family and sit them down and find out where we can get them the funding they need to help with that," said Carrier-Leigh Cloutier, Casakids. Casakids is encouraging families in need to stop by their office in downtown Roswell for help. The Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed that two people died as a result of last weekend's storm. Roswell police said there are no further reports of anyone missing right now. The Roswell Fire Department is warning drivers about checking around their car and truck engines before starting them up. The department has received several reports of vehicle fires in the last few days that they believe were sparked by excess flood debris.
