NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — About 75 unhoused people are currently living under the overpass located at Calliope Street and Loyola Avenue, making it one of the city's largest homeless encampments. However, on Monday, these folks were surprised to see about a dozen state police officers arrive at this location to tell them that they had until Oct. 24 to leave the encampment or they would be forced out by NOLA Troopers. "So it is pressure you know, it causes anxiety, you know, because you don't know where you're gonna go," one of the members of the encampment Melissa Austin said. Heightened security planned for Taylor swift Eras Tour These officers were ordered by Governor Jeff Landry who is hoping to have the city's streets cleared by the time the Taylor Swift concerts roll around. However, Director of the Mayor's Office of Homeless Services and Strategy Nathan Fields says that clearing the encampment would disrupt the work they have been doing to provide homes to those in need. "Sweeping individuals will allow those individuals to get lost in the process of housing. What we want to do is connect them to services. What we want to do is connect them to services and make sure that they get fair treatment that they are deserving of," Fields said. Those opposing Landry's plan say that those that would be forced to leave will scatter across the city, potentially creating even more homeless encampments. Fields says he is hoping that he is able to come together with the governor and find a solution before the Thursday deadline. "Maybe you can help us with an alternative sheltering process while we continue to work on them on housing, but what we are asking for you not to do is to just push them along," Fields said.
