PEARL CITY, Hawaii (KHON2) -- In Pearl City, an era of full tummies, big smiles, and delicious manapua is coming to a close. Joe Vu has been serving up manapua and other local grinds for almost five decades, but his last day of business will be Thursday. ‘Sad to see local store going away’: Petland closing after 86 years "Sad," said Rhonda Kealoha and Roxanne Cabra."Cause we, we always went to him every single day," Kealoha said."Our children, our grandchildren," Cabra said. "For me, it's the fried noodles and the fried pork hash and the fried chicken," Kealoha said. "And I actually took the day off to come here." Vu came to the United States in 1975 after the Vietnam War. He's been feeding Oahu families ever since especially local kids after they got off school. "He would be like, 'Ay, Annie! You never have enough money! Why, how much money you get now? So Annie tell em, 'Oh, Joe I only get $0.50.' ''Here here, go take the noodles then,' He used to always feed my kids," Susan Mahiai said. "Yeah. Good man." He has seen keiki in all stages as time marched on. "High school, they got married, they got children," Vu said. "Everything come from God, I have children and six grandchildren." He said he is ready for the next step after serving countless manapua. "Retire, take care of my wife, work out, exercise, we've got money to travel and bring my grandchildren, go school, help my daughter," Vu said. Vu's manapua sold out in 10 minutes and the rest of the food was gone by 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22 -- but he will have more on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and Thursday, Oct. 24. The last day to get some grub from Pearl City's Manapua Man will be on Wednesday and Thursday.
