"I wanted to vote on the first day because I saw it on the news this morning that they were having Honolulu Hale open for voting," said one voter. "So I said oh, I was off today, so I said 'ok this is the perfect time.'" Kauai voters to decide on five key Charter Amendments in General Election It's all about time for election officials. They're highly encouraging you to vote by drop box, mail-in, or in-person anytime before Nov. 5. "There's the easy way to do it and the difficult way to do it," said Glen Takahashi, Honolulu city clerk. "If you come at a time like this, you'll be in and out in 10 to 15 minutes. But if you happen to come on the last day, there are what we call procrastinators, and you'll probably be in line with them a couple of hours." Honolulu election officials estimated about 400 people voted in person on day one at their three locations - at Honolulu Hale, Kapolei Hale, or the current pop-up on the Windward side. These in-person sites are open Monday through Saturday. The last time the presidential election was on the ballot four years ago, 386,000 people on Oahu voted. "I think that might have been influenced by the fact that we were all couped up with COVID and we had nothing else to do but look at the mail that was coming to our house," said Takahashi. "This year, I don't know if we're gonna hit that kinda number but we hope it'll be north of 300,000." Some voters we spoke to said they had a problem with the constitutional amendments. They say they were wordy and kinda confusing. Election officials say the best way to deal with that - do a little homework beforehand. The state Office of Elections has a digital voter guide on its website. Click here for more information. "There are what they're called clear and concise summaries that were drafted, couple paragraph-long explanations that might be of help and we encourage people to go to their website to take a look at those," said Takahashi. "I think people should go out and vote to have their say in whoever, whatever they believe in," said one voter.
