GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- Artist Karla Taylor sees the value of helping people make memories. “Whether it was textiles on a sofa or my greeting cards hanging on somebody's refrigerator ... I just love to bring joy through my work,” she said. When she heard Greensboro Urban Ministry was calling for artists to create its 2024 Holiday Honor Card, she found inspiration in a community event that has led to some favorite memories of her own. “The First Friday event where they have the tree lighting is such a big deal for downtown, and the community comes together in so many ways to celebrate the tree lighting and to have the families come out and spend time together,” Taylor said. After reviewing more than 30 entries, Greensboro Urban Ministry selected Taylor’s work, which was inspired by the annual community tree lighting in downtown Greensboro. Her work titled “Peace, Joy, Hope, Love” is Greensboro Urban Ministry’s 2024 Holiday Honor Card. “Her artwork just literally stood out right off the bat because it's all hand drawn … Very creative and different,” Greensboro Urban Ministry Community Engagement Manager Cheryl Ledford said. Greensboro Urban Ministry’s Holiday Honor Card has been available since 1983 for a donation. The money is used to help people experiencing hunger and homelessness. “Everyone should know that every bit of the money goes back to helping our shelters, our food programs, our emergency assistance programs,” Ledford said. As an artist, Taylor has enjoyed several notable achievements throughout her career, including having her work in stores and being the director at Just Be, which has locations in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. She’s just as grateful to have her work included in this meaningful tradition. “I'm so proud that they picked it and to have it depict downtown Greensboro which has been such a big part of my life for the past 10 years. It’s a huge honor," she said. Greensboro Urban Ministry’s Holiday Honor Card raised $223,000 last year. This season’s card is available for preorder online. It will be available at retail locations beginning Nov. 2.
