(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — The Colorado Attorney General's Office revealed the 2024 Colorado Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board Annual Report on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Colorado saw 47 domestic violence cases which resulted in 58 fatalities in 2023, a decrease from 2022's 62 cases that resulted in 94 deaths. According to this year's report, 30 current or intimate partners and seven other victims died in the context of domestic violence in the state in 2023. According to the report, domestic violence fatalities (DVF) accounted for 11% of all homicides in Colorado. The report said cases were similar to past years with most of the perpetrators being men. This year though, over half of the collateral victims were children of the DVF couple. El Paso County had eight deaths, Teller County had two and Pueblo County had one death attributed to domestic violence. Data showed that rural counties had more domestic violence cases rather than urban areas. Teller County was one of the counties with the highest number of domestic violence deaths per 100,000 people. Stakeholders in El Paso County are working to lay the groundwork for a Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team to review DVFs in Colorado Springs and nearby communities. The board was established in 2017 and was renewed for five more years in 2022. To read the full report, click the link above. Domestic violence victims can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE or text LOVEIS to 22522. The national hotline is open 24 hours a day in more than 200 languages and will connect you to local resources that can help.
