MINOT, N.D. (KXNET) — It's spooky season, and a good time to get your fright on. Small Town Terror, a haunted house in Sawyer opened its doors for the first time 10 years ago, and it has only grown since then. It is completely run by volunteers, and profits from the event benefit 13 different organizations and businesses in the community. The house has changed a lot over the years, and is always trying to provide a better experience for visitors. "Some of the feedback we got last time is that it was really dark," says co-host Shelby Bird. "So when we brought those lights up, we really focused on things that draw your attention, that you can notice." Small Town Terror uses dolls, animatronics, and actors for their scares, and it takes more than a month to set the whole house up. We'll just give a preview, we don't want to spoil all the scary fun. After walking out of the Toxic room, we headed into the mannequin room — which features different mannequins, mannequin heads, and full-sized dolls that are more than likely to scare visitors. "Every time you walk through that barrier," Bird says, "you aren't sure what you're going to encounter on the other side. That kind of just adds that element of fear to it as well." Weekend BRB: Mandan’s Haunted Fort, then and now Bird says they've brought in a lot of new elements to enhance the frightening experience. "We have kind of seen a lot with the clowns," Bird continues, "and we're bringing that into our haunted house this year. It seems like that's the "it" thing — you know, the "it" thing in the fear culture right now." A few rooms later, there are multiple spiders and cobwebs to encounter. After walking through the outside of the maze, you end up at Gramma Jo's Eatery — and if you are not a fan of the maze, you can instead watch your family and friends get scared on their live feed. Small Town Terror brings a lot of people into Sawyer who wouldn't normally come for a visit. Many creative minds have come up with new and unique ways to make the haunted house so special that it keeps visitors coming back. The building is a family-friendly haunted house, but also a scary one. It is recommended that younger children attend with parental supervision. They will open on October 25th and 26th from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and again on November 1st from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
