COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The suspect in an incident involving a snowplow on Interstate 71 in August that injured four is dead after an altercation with Mansfield police. Michael S. Oswalt II, 41, was shot and killed early Saturday morning when Mansfield Department of Police officers responded to a domestic violence call on Cline Avenue. Oswalt was accused of throwing a wrench at and hitting a Columbus police officer after Oswalt allegedly caused a four-vehicle crash on I-71 on Aug. 10. Oswalt fled the scene and then held police in a standoff before being arrested. Oswalt was charged with one felony count of assaulting a police officer. This past weekend, according to Mansfield police, officers responded to the home at approximately 1:56 a.m., where they were met by the victim and Oswalt. Oswalt, who police said was armed with a knife, fled back into the home, where the victim's two children were. The female victim was able to get back into the house through a back door. Police began negotiating with Oswalt, who appeared to be intoxicated. During three hours of negotiations, the children were able to leave the house. A short time later, the woman was able to flee the house with Oswalt chasing her; police said Oswalt was armed with a knife. SWAT officers fired less-lethal measures at Oswalt to little to no effect, prompting officers to resort to lethal measures, Mansfield police said. SWAT medics at the scene gave Oswalt life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is investigating the shooting.
