FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va (DC News Now) -- Fairfax County’s affordable housing waitlist is now open for eligible families. Applications are available online until Oct. 27 at 11:59 p.m. Program applicants will be chosen at random to be placed on the waiting lists. Eligibility hinges on income level and household size. The program uses federal funds from the Project Based Voucher program. The program pays a portion of families’ rent, based on 32% to 35% of adjusted gross income, meaning that rent will correspond to a household’s financial capacity. Prince William County gravesite relocation sparks outcry Landlords register specific rental units to participate in the program. The benefit stays with the unit. If a family moves from a unit, they do not take the benefit with them to their next home; It remains available to the next voucher recipient who moves into the unit. Participating units are located at Coralain Gardens in Falls Church, The Residences at North Hill and The Senior Residence at North Hill in Alexandria, and Little River Glen in Fairfax, which is only for seniors. A variety of home sizes are available, ranging from studio to three-bedroom apartments. Applicants must apply online on RentCafe. Instructions are available in both English and Spanish. Rental assistance is just one facet of the county board’s plan to attack the housing affordability crisis in Fairfax. Over the summer, the board expanded the criteria for the county’s affordable homeownership program. Families earning 70% to 100% of the area’s median income are eligible to purchase a participating home.
