HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) -- Hagerstown's airport is contemplating charging for parking in the future. The idea comes as proposed capital improvements at the Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR) are pending before the Washington County Commission. But how to pay for them? "With paid parking," Andrew Eshleman, public works director for the county, said. "We still feel that, at $5 a day it's a very fair and reasonable price compared with what you'll encounter at the other metro airports like Reagan and Dulles and BWI." Parade in Hagerstown prompting road closures Eshleman said they're still trying to figure out a possible middle ground. "We're still looking at having a very affordable and accommodating experience for people who choose Hagerstown Regional Airport," he said. Irman is a business consultant from Saudi Arabia working on a project in western Maryland and loves the parking convenience at HGR. "Each time I can find a space here," Irman said. "I can easily find one. We can park the car here for some time, maybe longer than we were expecting." At the car rental counter in the terminal, Hope said you can't beat the parking deal at HGR. "We have free parking," Hope said. "You can leave your vehicle, pick up your rental vehicle when you're done dropping yours off and it's a good convenience." And while the proposal for paid parking is subject to approval of county commissioners, even under the new plan your first hour of parking is still free.
