SAPELO ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) - Following the Sapelo Island dock gangway collapse, a notable civil rights and personal injury attorney says some families are considering taking legal action. Ben Crump is representing the families of three people who died in the collapse and a person critically injured in the incident. He stood with those family members at a press conference on Tuesday. "We won't rest until we get those answers," Crump said. Each of those who died was a senior citizen who was celebrating Gullah Geechee culture at a festival on Saturday. 'Heart-wrenching': Bystanders recall Sapelo Island gangway collapse "They loved our community. They loved our history. They loved Black culture, and they wanted to make sure that Black history and Black culture... They should not have been taken this way," Crump said. Some of those family members on the stage with him also struggled in the water and are now witnesses, like Regina Brunson. "When we got in the middle of that gangway, I heard a crack. Then I looked, and all I remember is releasing the walker and Miss Carlotta just fell straight down in the water. And I looked up and I said, 'Oh my god, what is happening here?' All of us ended up in the water," Brunson said. According to a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the gangway connected the stationary dock to the floating dock. That DNR spokesperson says they can't confirm that since they are still investigating. That main gangway has since been removed, and a temporary one is now in use. It was inspected on Monday and found to be stable, according to the DNR. Meanwhile, grieving families and their lawyers are looking for answers. They say they want to know what caused the gangway to collapse and if it was preventable. "We are united in trying to make sure that the world never forgets the Sapelo seven... those seven individuals whose lives were lost, we believe, unnecessarily, unjustifiably and it was certainly preventable," Crump said. The incident is still under investigation.
