ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Motorists in New Mexico will have a new license plate option, featuring the Gila Monster. The New Mexico Game Department of Game and Fish partnered with the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division to release the Gila Monster themed plate. ‘We don’t want our church to go away’: Small New Mexico community raising money to repair long-standing chapel All proceeds from the plate will go towards the Share With Wildlife program, which funds innovative research, habitat enhancement and education projects. The Gila Monster plate is the fifth wildlife art plate to be released, joining quail, mule deer, Rio Grande cutthroat trout and roadrunner plates. The art for the Gila Monster plate was created by W. Howard Brandenburg. The Gila Monster is an iconic animal in the southwest desert and spends most of its life in underground burrows. It is one of only two venomous lizards in North America, but a component of its venom is used as a key ingredient in medication for Type-2 Diabetes.
