During the past fiscal year that ended June 30, Peace House, an anti-domestic violence nonprofit, reported 1,468 individuals from Summit and Wasatch counties received support and resources through its emergency helpline. That line, 1-800-647-9161, is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, said Sally Tauber, community engagement and major gifts director.“We have trained advocates who answer the phones, support the callers, offer information and connect people with services that they need,” she said.Peace House will showcase more information, connections and resources during its open house that runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 700 Round Valley Drive at Quinn’s Junction. The event, where people can drop in at any time, is free, according to Tauber.“We do have registration, but you don’t have to register,” she said. “We just offer that so we get some kind of idea of how many people may attend the event.”Peace House staff, board members and volunteers will be on hand to engage with the public, answer questions and refer them to resources, Tauber said.“We’ll also have a light breakfast with coffee and hot cider,” she said. “We want to share our story and our facility with the community. We invite everyone to come in. People will be stationed around so they can talk about their areas of concentration, so this is a chance to engage. And we’re excited to welcome people to our campus.”The open house will take place on the campus’ lower level, Tauber said.“We have people who are currently living at and using our shelter and transitional housing, so those areas won’t be open,” she said. “And the residents will choose whether or not to come down and interact with the public.”The event will also feature a “Peaceful Pumpkin” project to celebrate the Halloween season, according to Tauber.“We’ll have pumpkins that people can take home and decorate,” she said. “We encourage them to do that in a peaceful way and share photos on their social media accounts. They can use hashtag #peacehouse.”Peace House will host an open house on Saturday to give the community a chance to learn about the anti-domestic violence nonprofit’s mission and programs. The event, which runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. will be a drop-in format and feature a light breakfast and a “Peaceful Pumpkin” project. In addition to the nearly 1,500 people who called into Peace House’s helpline, the nonprofit also logged in 2,070 total volunteer hours dedicated to supporting programs and services, Tauber said.“We have many volunteer opportunities, but when you interact directly with our clients, you do need to have completed 40 hours of training,” she said. “We have training going on right now, but we’ll have more training coming up. So, people can go to our website and fill out the application.”The application is accessible at peacehouse.org/volunteer and will be handled by Uche Unamma, Peace House’s new volunteer coordinator.“Uche has only been here a few days, but she’s amazing,” Tauber said.Adding to Peace House’s services, it also reported a total of 4,223 total sexual-assault service hours provided by staff and volunteers.“Those include a variety of services, including our hospital-response team who goes to the Park City Hospital if someone reports an assault and comes in for exams,” she said.Other Peace House services include its emergency shelter, which provided 5,259 nights of safety, and its prevention-education team, according to Tauber.“Our prevention-education team reached out to 28,436 students, teachers and community members in Summit and Wasatch counties,” she said. “Some of the ways they did that was to go into schools to work with students in kindergarten through senior year by offering age-appropriate time and presentations. They also do a lot of child-abuse prevention and give the children a voice.”Peace House Open HouseWhen: 9:30-11:30 a.m.  Where: Peace House campus, 700 Round Valley Drive Cost: Free Web: peacehouse.org/event/open-houseThe post A Peace House open house welcomes the community appeared first on Park Record.
