JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Victor Colella, a lifelong Johnston resident who went viral following his appearance on "Caught in Providence" with Judge Frank Caprio, has died. The 101-year-old passed away over the weekend, his family told 12 News. Colella wound up in court after triggering a school zone camera in Providence and receiving a ticket more than five years ago. Then 96, Colella explained through tears to Caprio that he was driving his son, who was diagnosed with cancer, to a doctor’s appointment. "I don't drive that fast, judge," he said at the time. "I drive slowly, and I only drive when I have to." SEE ALSO: Lifelong Rhode Islander celebrates 100th birthday Touched by his story, Caprio tossed out Colella’s ticket and dismissed the case. Colella's televised court date with Caprio made him a local celebrity overnight, with his court appearance being viewed and shared by millions across the globe. His story about caring for his sick son, even at his advanced age, even pulled at the heart strings of Rhode Island Honor Flight chairman George Farrell. Nearly a month after Colella went viral, Farrell invited the World War II veteran to board Honor Flight X-Ray. Everything came full circle on Colella's 100th birthday, when he received a surprise visit from Caprio. It was the first time the two men had seen one another since Colella's court appearance. Calling hours for Colella will take place between 4-7 p.m. at Maceroni Funeral Home in North Providence on Friday. His funeral will be held at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Johnston Saturday at 9:45 a.m. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Daily Roundup SIGN UP NOW
