New Bedford man pleads guilty to soninlaw's murder

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford man was sentenced to more than 19 years in prison for the 2021 shooting death of his son-in-law in broad daylight, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.
Alphanso Richards, 62, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Tuesday and was sentenced to 19.5 years to life in state prison. He also received an eight-to-10-year concurrent sentence for attempted assault and battery with a firearm against his daughter.
On Aug. 9, 2021, Naurik Michel-Brown, 23, drove to Car Tunes on Ashley Boulevard to check on a car with his wife, Tiamara Michel-Brown, and their three children, the District Attorney's Office said in a release. While outside, Naurik approached Richards. Tiamara noticed her father approaching her husband with his arm extended, then heard gunshots and watched Naurik fall to the ground.

In a panic, Tiamara fled to a nearby gas station to call 911 as more shots were fired in her direction.
After the shooting, Richards fled Massachusetts. He was located two months later by state troopers in Virginia, who searched his car and found a registered loaded gun under the driver's seat. Quinn's office said this gun was determined to be the murder weapon.
“This is another senseless act of violence committed in broad daylight with total disregard for the safety of the victims and the public that has left three children without a father and impacted the family forever,” Quinn said in a statement.
