The Governor’s Office of Economic Development recognizes Cybersecurity Awareness Month this October, showcasing South Dakota’s rapidly growing cybersecurity sector and its significant impact on the state’s economy. “South Dakota has emerged as a national leader in cybersecurity, offering high-paying jobs and driving innovation in this critical field,” said GOED Commissioner Joe Fiala. “Our state’s cybersecurity industry is not only protecting vital digital assets but also creating tremendous economic value.” The state currently has 9,200 existing cybersecurity jobs, with 900 job openings, highlighting the ongoing demand for skilled professionals. Existing cybersecurity positions offer an average annual salary of $86,000, while information security analysts earn an average of $102,000 annually. The cybersecurity industry in South Dakota contributes $680 million annually in GDP to the state’s economy. Over the past decade, South Dakota has experienced the second-fastest growth in the cybersecurity industry of any state in the U.S. Expanding the Dakota State University Applied Research Lab to Sioux Falls is pivotal to this growth. This cutting-edge facility, covering 100,000 square feet, will join the Madison location as a hub for cybersecurity innovation and talent cultivation. It will feature advanced research spaces and support collaborative projects with government and industry partners. Integral to the lab’s mission is the Dakota State Applied Research Corporation (DARC), a primary tenant focused on cybersecurity, data science, and software engineering. DARC, a non-profit that fosters collaboration between academia and industry, drives innovative solutions, and addresses national security challenges. The investment of several public and private partners into this small business marks a significant advancement for South Dakota, reinforcing its position as a leader in the national cybersecurity arena and making a lasting impact on the local economy. As Cybersecurity Awareness Month unfolds, GOED invites businesses and individuals to explore the world of cybersecurity. By learning more about best practices and the career opportunities available in this dynamic field, we can all contribute to the continued growth and success of South Dakota’s cybersecurity industry.
