FLANDREAU, S.D. (KELO) -- Election day is exactly two weeks away, and many South Dakotan are already casting a ballot. Minnehaha County saw 925 people show up for early voting, Monday alone. KELOLAND News checked in with other counties to find out what they're seeing. The Clay County auditor tells us more than 1,200 people have voted as of Tuesday afternoon, which is about 14 percent voter turnout. In Brookings County, nearly 3,100 ballots have been cast as of Tuesday afternoon. That's about 15 percent voter turnout. Casting a ballot is important to Moody County voter Dianna Torson. Crofton boy missing; sexual assault; water main break "I have cast a ballot in every election since I was 18," Torson said. On Tuesday, she voted absentee at the county courthouse. "I just find it more convenient. I don't like lines," Torson said. Moody County Auditor Tawny Heinemann says about 450 absentee ballots have been cast as of about noon on Monday. That's over 10 percent voter turnout. "This is tax month, so typically people will come in and pay their taxes and then vote while they're here just to get it out of the way. And we have a lot of snowbirds that want to get their vote in before they leave," Heinemann said. In addition to candidates, this year's ballot includes seven statewide ballot questions. Her advice to voters is to grab a sample ballot before you vote. "A lot of people like to take their sample ballot home and fill it out so when they go into the polls or if they come in person to vote they have everything lined up how they want to vote and they can just copy it over," Heinemann said. Election day is November 5th. "I just hope people get out. I hope people get out and vote this year," Torson said. KELOLAND.com is your local election headquarters.
