MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Mid-South has unfortunately been rocked in the past week with several disturbing crimes, and some of them seem to have the same thing in common as law enforcement calls them domestic violence cases. October is domestic violence awareness month and leaders say it is crucial to raise awareness of a problem plaguing the nation. The key is making sure victims and their loved ones know there are services available.  22-year-old Ellie Young, a medical student with a bright future was shot and killed at Shelby Farms this weekend as hundreds walked for breast cancer awareness. Investigators say her attacker was her 26-year-old ex-boyfriend, Jackson Hopper. He told police he was acting in self-defense after she pulled a knife on him.  24-year-old Tevon Rose appeared before a judge this morning, accused of killing his mother and then burning her body behind their southeast Shelby County home this weekend.  Tevon Rose (SCSO) In Crockett County, deputies are looking for Antonio Jacques Pewitte, after they say he tried to kill a woman he shares a child with, stabbing her four times in the face and another time in the arm as she was walking into her workplace.  Antonio Pewitte. "These cases are a good reminder of just how serious domestic violence can be," said Sandy Bromley, Director of the Division of Community Services for Shelby County. Bromley shared a sobering stat, telling us a gun being present during a domestic violence incident makes it five times more likely that a victim of domestic violence will be killed. "So, we really just want to make sure that we are getting the word out around domestic violence and the fact that there are services available, and if you feel like you are at high risk let's start talking about firearm safety in the home," said Bromley. "Safety planning just sort of around where you're going, what you're doing, and if there are ways to file criminal charges or to file an order of protection in which case you wouldn't need to go to the police necessarily." Bromley says those can be filed at the Shelby County Crime Victims and Rape Crisis Center online or by calling 901-222-3950, or online with the Family Safety Center, and by phone at 901-222-4400.
