Though the vote means that MATA employees' jobs are safe for the time being, Gisela Guerrero with the Better Transit for a Better Memphis said that without funding, the win could be short-lived. "Mayor Young has directed the Memphis Area Transit Authority Board to halt planned layoffs and service cuts following sustained pressure from Better Transit for a Better Memphis (BTBM)," Guerrero said. "While this is a temporary win, BTBM warns that without significant funding, MATA’s current system cannot sustain its services or implement TransPro's recommendations." Mayor Young said that his administration is committed to the MATA board and will work with the city council to find additional funding to get by. A representative said that it will cost about $5 million over the next few months for staffing and equipment.
