CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — FEMA teams are busy making sure people get the help they need in western North Carolina. People in 39 counties are eligible for individual assistance, including some of the hardest-hit areas like Buncombe County and Yancey County. It also includes Wilkes County and Caldwell County, which are areas where the damage is not as widespread. April White has been canvassing neighborhoods in western North Carolina since Helene hit.  Some people just need a supportive ear or someone to answer their questions. “They ask us, 'Are we alone,' and we tell them, 'No ... We’re more of a grant and things of that matter,' because I think they’re more scared of that money FEMA gives them that they have to pay them back. We tell them, 'No. We’re not,'” White said. Others need help rebuilding, and that's a question FEMA workers often have to answer. “FEMA is not intended to put their house all back together ... That’s not our mission. FEMA can only jump-start it," FEMA spokesperson Jann Tracy said. There are plenty of ways FEMA is able to help fast.  “That $750 we hear so much about. People keep saying, ‘Is that all we get? $750? ... That is just the start. That is just for critical needs," Tracy said. So far, disaster survivor assistance teams have been able to help people in western North Carolina fill out 7,500 applications for FEMA assistance. That number will continue to grow as they continue to go door to door asking people what they need.
