According to Browns reporter Brad Stainbrook, the Detroit Lions are one of many teams who have reached out to the Cleveland Browns about a potential trade for edge rusher Za’Darius Smith. Per Stainbook, the Ravens and Commanders are “just a few” of the other teams who have talked to the Browns. Last week, Smith was asked about a potential trade to the Lions, and the 32-year-old pass rusher seemed intrigued by the idea. “I’m staying positive, but now that you say that, it might be a good look, a good feel for me,” Smith said. The Browns’ season appears to be lost. Not only are they 1-6 through seven games, but they just lost starting quarterback Deshaun Watson for the season with an Achilles injury. It would stand to reason that they may become sellers at the trade deadline, and a veteran like Smith is a logical asset they could unload for draft capital. Thus far in 2024, Smith has a sack in four of the Browns’ seven games and three additional tackles for loss on the season. His 67.6 overall PFF grade ranks 38th out of 73 qualifying edge rushers, and he also ranks 38th in pressures (15). But Smith is also a good schematic fit for the Lions. At 6-foot-4, 275 pounds, he’s a physical presence who will not only help them shrink the quarterback pocket but will provide strong run support. During his Tuesday morning radio appearance, Lions coach Dan Campbell seemed to indicate that general manager Brad Holmes is hard at work looking to find some defensive end help in the wake of Aidan Hutchinson’s injury. “Believe us, we’re looking,” Campbell said. “Brad’s on it, and we’ll find somebody that fits us and brings something. Like I said, a complementary piece that helps that d-line.”
